Bentota in the South West of Sri Lanka is the widest, most beautiful sandy beach of all that has recently caught the fancy of the tourism industry with thriving resorts and hotels in the area. The beach side has pleasant lagoons that are safe to swim throughout the year. The coast, however, varies in terms of safety with change of season. The beach of Unawatuna and surrounding beaches are much narrower but offer excellent opportunities for snorkeling with their colorful coral reefs. Just 37 km from Colombo towards North is a sandy beach known as Negombo that sports prominent remains of Dutch colonial rule. The historical links of the beach in the form of remnants of fort, canal and churches scattered all over the place, render this beach a favored tourist spot.
Another beach of historical value is Mt. Lavinia beach situated just 12km away from Colombo . An idyllic place to relax, Mt. Lavinia is a favorite picnic spot for locals and tourists alike and is particularly crowded on weekends and public holidays. The beach offers all typical beach sports activities plus live bands and DJs keep the beach rocking with pleasant music.
Beruwela beach is an ideal spot for lovers with its picturesque white sandy stretch along side blue water and line of palm trees dotting the patch.
Hikkaduwa beach is another highly panoramic beach that captivates attention with its beautiful layered coral reefs, countless colorful fishes and turtles. The beach has ideal waves for board surfing and body surfing.
