The prime most among the sites is the sacred city of Anuradhapura , widely celebrated as the supreme monastic city of the prehistoric world. The city is located in the North-Central part of the land mass. The city was founded in 500 BC and served as the regal capital to 113 kings during its 1300 years of prosperous lifespan. This is the city where the first sapling of the Buddha's enlightenment tree was brought down by Sanghamitta in the 3 rd century BC. The city was later forsaken in 993 AD as the capital in favor of Polonnaruwa, which led to its eclipse for years away in dense forests. The city was found again in the 19 th century with its majestic palaces, monasteries and other architectural riches, which captured the fancies of the world instantly.
Among the many museums at Sri Lanka , the National Museum at Colombo is the largest and the oldest of all in the country. Established in 1877, the museum is situated inside a magnificent building that refreshes the fine colonial architecture for the audience. The museum showcases a marvelous collection of very old royal regalia, artworks of Sinhalese, antique furniture, China and very precious manuscripts.
